#3 – Low Toxicity Paints

Did you know that not all paint is created equal? Volatile Organic Compounds(VOC), are in all oil-based paints and linger in the air reducing air quality after the paint dries. VOC’s can cause headaches, dizziness, and respiratory challenges for individuals with breathing and other special needs. The U.S. Enviroment Protection Agency suspects that VOC’s are carcinogens. Many cleaning products now contain VOC’s also. The federal government has put a cap on the VOC content at 250 grams/liter for flat finishes and 380grams/liter for semi-gloss finishes. Using water-based paints instead of oil-based paints is one alternative. Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and the Green Painter in Houston sell water-based low VOC paints. Water-based paints can be used over oil-based paints by lightly sanding over the existing paint and removing the sheen. Advances in technology have improved the durability and longevity of water-based paints.
